Nokian Tyres Fastest on Ice

The new world record for fastest car on ice was set by Nokian Tyres' Finnish test driver Janne Laitinen who drove 331,610 km/h (206,05 mph) on the Gulf of Bothnia in Oulu, Finland. The record was broken on March 6th on a 14-kilometer ice track in freezing conditions. The world's leading winter tyre manufacturer equipped the record-breaking car with Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 studded tyres (255/35R20 97 T XL).

Extreme speeds emphasize the role of top-quality tyres; they are the vehicle’s only contact point with the driving surface. When driving at exceptionally high speeds on slippery ice, the tyres must provide maximal grip, excellent structural durability and handling properties that are in line with the car's high power.

The acceleration formula is demanding. When a car moves at a speed of 331 km/h, the car covers over 92 meters in one second. The tyres are under immense pressure at these high speeds, and their diameter can increase by 15–20 mm.

As the air resistance increases, more traction is needed in order to pick up speed. Testing at high speeds in demanding conditions forms an important part of the Nokian winter tyre (in Finnish: talvirengas) development. Testing the boundaries can teach new things, which can then be reflected in all of the products explains Matti Morri from the Nokian Tyres' Technical Customer Service Manager.

The Guinness World Records organization outlines detailed rules for ice driving world records. The time for the one-kilometer distance is taken for driving in both directions of the track, and the world record time is the average of these two results. The vehicle takes a flying start. There is a total of one hour to complete the record attempt. The ice has to be natural and it may not be roughed up or treated with any chemicals. The tyres must be commercially available and approved for road traffic in the country in which the record attempt takes place.

Nokian winter tyre master of extreme conditions

Nokian Tyres developed the world’s first winter tyre for raw, subzero conditions back in 1934. Two years later, it introduced the Hakkapeliitta, designed for northern winters and today one of the world’s best-known winter tyre brands. The world’s northernmost tyre manufacturer tests and develops new additions, customized for different uses, for its winter tyre family at its own test facilities in Ivalo, 300 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle.

Nokian Tyres is the only tyre manufacturer in the world that focuses on products and services that facilitate safe transportation in Nordic conditions. The company's innovative passenger car, van and heavy-duty machinery tyres are mainly marketed in areas that have snow, forest and changing seasons that make driving conditions demanding. Nokian Tyres owns the Vianor tyre chain that comprises more than 770 stores in 20 countries. The company's net sales for 2010 totalled approximately EUR 1,058 million, and it had 3,500 employees.

Uncompromising Nokian testing

Tyres are surprisingly technical products, consisting of many components and subject to exacting requirements. They are active safety factors in vehicles, providing the only contact with the ground. Finns are, by nature, familiar with snow, ice, slush and fickle winter weather. This, however, does not ensure a magic formula for winter tyre (in Finnish: talvirengas) solutions. You also need technical skills, experience, a systematic approach, determination, a good deal of work and a dash of Nordic frenzy.

The main task of R&D is to support the company’s status as the manufacturer of the world’s best winter and forestry tyres. The key R&D principle has remained the same for over 75 years: to develop tyres for consumers driving in northern conditions, who demand safety and durability from their tyres in all circumstances.

Development is based on the principle of sustainable safety, which states that the safety properties of a tyre should remain intact, even as the tyre wears.

Safety is improved using technical innovations

Apart from safety and economy, the company also emphasises the advanced features and originality of its products. The innovation processes aim to profitably process and commercialise new ideas. The square stud, driving safety indicator (DSI) and aquaplaning indicator are some of our latest innovations to improve tyre safety and driving comfort.

Sharply focused specialization point the way for R&D

Tyre development requires carefully focused planning. Different market areas need their own customized products. The R&D team keeps close track of the movements and changes in the markets’ and consumers’ needs. Creating successful products calls for detailed familiarization, with new developments in automobile technology and confidential co-operation with machine and equipment manufacturers is a must in the development of heavy tyres.

Improved car performance has increased the demand for low-profile, high-speed passenger car tyres, and Nokian Tyres has launched a variety of new products in this segment. SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) tyres are a growing product group.

In the heavy tyres product area, special emphasis is placed on radial special tyres. The development of retreading materials draws on the vast range of tyre technology know-how and expertise accumulated at Nokian Tyres.

This is unique safety from the world-leading winter tyre (in Finnish: talvirengas) manufacturer. The new Nokian WR winter tyres offer a virtuoso combination of safety and carefree driving pleasure. This advanced new-generation tyre family is a reflection of Nokian Tyres' tailorwork at its best: Nokian WR D3 and Nokian WR A3 are designed for different vehicles and drivers but for any winter weather. These environmentally friendly premium products feature nanotechnology, canola oil and the solid winter expertise of Nokian Tyres, which guarantee their reliable functionality in the typically varying winter conditions of Central Europe.

Extreme weather-related phenomena have become increasingly common, and this has opened drivers' eyes to appreciating the safety of high-quality winter tyres. Central Europe in particular has experienced varying types of weather this winter, from pouring rain to heavy snowfall. In response to this, the long-term product development work on the new winter tyre family essentially focused on achieving relentless grip in all conditions and an accurate, comfortable driving response that is reliable without surprises.

"We utilized our top expertise and knowledge of all types of winter conditions. Thanks to nanotechnology, new materials and innovations, as well as our modern production technology, we are able to provide drivers with tyres that have first-class grip and handling properties," explains Teppo Huovila, Nokian Tyres' Vice President, R&D.

Computer models to illustrate the Nokian WR tyres' function and thorough laboratory work that focused on rubber compounds, led to unique solutions. The extensive research efforts were complemented by uncompromising tests in arctic conditions at Nokian Tyres' test centre in Ivalo, Lapland. In addition to winter testing, the products were fine-tuned at several test tracks in Central Europe. The test track in Nokia, Finland, features a unique slush planing test method that enabled optimising the tyres' outstanding slush properties. The final, premium safety concept was achieved as the result of close co-operation between development teams and test drivers.

Study: 70% of Finns choose studded tyres

A winter tyre study of 2011: Finns trust studded tyres in both rural and city use. On the other hand, the friction tyre was seen with a lower rolling resistance and lower fuel consumption. Although the Finns have improved knowledge about tyres, there are lots of cars on the road with bald tyres. They are the most important road driving characteristics of a security risk.

YouGov Finland's winter tyre (in Finnish: talvirengas) survey indicates that 70% of Finnish motorists prefer the studded winter tyres over non-studded tyres. The study of Finnish views on studded and the non-studded tyre matters.

- Finnish tyre knowledge has improved in recent years, but still there is an alarming number of cars with tyres in poor condition. A tyre is not enough to think of a safety risk, although it has been, says Nokian Tyres Technical Customer Service Manager, Matti Morri.

Studded or non-studded?

The study shows that nearly 90% of Finns know that studded tyres are a safer choice on an icy road. The same is also true to varying conditions, such as city streets, where the grip conditions can vary several times during the same day. Furthermore, 69% of Finns believe that studded winter tyre is a better option for driving conditions on the countryside.

- In rural areas, weather conditions do not vary much more than in the city, in which case the choice of non-studded tyre can also be justified. In challenging weather conditions, the winter tyre, of course bites better, Morri said.

Varying weather conditions associated with the varying perceptions of studded and non-studded tyres differ. The study also investigated male and female respondents' differences of opinion on what tyre works best in which circumstances.

- Male respondents, 23% were of the opinion that the non-studded and studded tyres are on the same level on snowy or slushy roads. This view of women was only 14%, says Morri results.

Facts about the winter tyre study in 2011

- The winter tyre survey was conducted by YouGov Finland.
- The survey asked opinions about studded and non-studded tyres and their suitability in different weather conditions.
- Data collected from the web survey between July 1 to July 6 2011, during the consumer panel of YouGov Group. The panel includes 25 000 people in Finland.
- Number of survey respondents was 1005. The target group was 18-74 year-old Finns.
- The start and the final number of respondents were chosen accordingly of the population by age, sex and country of residence.

The jubilee seminar

The 10th Rengasfoorumi (in English, tyre forum) was held 9th of March 2011 in Vantaa, Finland. Rengasfoorumi is annual meeting of car and traffic journalist, and people working in the tyre industry.

The topic of the jubilee seminar was tyre safety during the winter season. Additionally to the seminar lecturers and panels, the participants were able to test drive different winter tyres (in Finnish, talvirengas) from several manufacturers in the race track of Vantaa.

The first presentation was held by chairman of the board, Mr. J Nuora. His presentation was introduction to the day’s topic. Nuora presented the winter tyre regulations and recommendations also. Maybe the most intriguing fact was that of the accidents caused by snowy or icy circumstances, 36 percents are related to the tyres. Challenging and changing road conditions confront both tyres and drivers.

Nuora held a critical view to the current legislations related to studded tyres. He pointed out that in 21st century, already 13 accidents leading to the death of 16 people have happened at October, when the weather conditions are changing fast. Most car owners follow the law saying that studded tyres are allowed from November onwards, and they will not change the studded tyres before that date. In neighbour countries like Sweden, the studded tyres can be installed already in the start of October. Changing the legistaltion similar to the neighbor countries could save lives, Nuora addressed.

The next speaker was chief engineer Mr P Sainio from Aalto University. He presented different aspects of the discussion related to the studded tyres. As Sainio noted, there are enthuastic supporters for every types of winter tyres, and the discussion of the best winter tyres (in Finnish, renkaat) gets often deeply passionate. Sainio pointed out that discussions are fulfilled with emotions, and the own aspect is usually supported by research, tests and statistics claiming the excellence of that aspect.

According Sainio, there is only a limited amount of good research information available relate to the safety of the traffic, harms that tyres can do for the asphalt, tyre noise or street dust. The lack of comparative aspect and continuation in the research is one problem; the other is the constant development of tyre and car technology, which makes studies to be all the time outdated.

According to Sainio, the most important thing for the car safety are tyres that are in a good shape and suitable for the surface. But not only tyres make car safe: from driver anticipation, foreseeing and respect for the other driver is needed.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta winter tyre test wins

Year 2011 seems to be a continuum to the success story of the 75 year old Nokian Hakkapelitta winter tyre. Hakkapelitta winter tyres (in Finnish: talvirenkaat) have scored test wins and top positions both with their studded as well as non-studded tyres. The sensation continues this year as well, as the studded Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 and non-studded Nokian Hakkapeliitta R have received excellent reviews in magazine tests both in Finland and abroad.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 won a test held by Tuulilasi (13/2011). "The 7's best features are balanced driving properties in different conditions. When driving on ice, the tyres even allow for a small mistake and there's still enough grip for correction. Mild over-steering during snow conditions doesn't require correcting, as the slipping straightens itself out", says Tuulilasi which is a Finnish motoring magazine with 48 years of testing experience. Five 205/55 R16 sized tyres were tested.

The studded Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 achieved second position in a test held by Tekniikan Maailma which is a 58 year old Finnish magazine specialized in technique and equipment testing. Tekniikan Maailma (17/2011) summarises the test as: “Nokian represents the absolute peak level of the tyre industry regarding grip on ice and snow. The tyre is excellent to drive, steers impeccably on grip limits, even during sliding and in extreme conditions control is easy. For those wanting the best possible winter grip, Nokian is the number one choice for winter". Ten studded 205/55 R16 tyres were tested.

In the very same magazine, also the Nokian Hakkapeliitta R gained second position in the Tekniikan Maailma's (17/2011) test. "Nokian winter tyre works more than well on an icy road and brilliantly in snow. The Nokian Hakkapeliitta R winter tyre is easy to control and steers well on the best grip limit and returns easily from extreme situations. The tyre is quiet and its rolling resistance is the lowest of the entire test", says Tekniikan Maailma. Nine non-studded tyres size 205/65 R16 were used in the test.

The non-studded winter tyre Nokian Hakkapeliitta R won the Tuulilasi (12/2011) test. "Nokian non-studded winter tyre Nokian Hakkapeliitta R is at its strongest on ice and in snow. Its best features are balanced driving qualities and good grip in different driving situations. With Hakkapeliitta R, it is possible to correct even after slipping has begun", writes Tuulilasi, which tested five non-studded winter tyres sized 205/55 R16.

Propably the best winter tyres?

Once again the Nokian winter tyre (in Finnish, talvirengas) is “very recommendable” in tests. The new Nokian WR D3 winter tyre got the best statements in the winter tyre tests of 2011 of the German car magazines “Auto Motor und Sport“ and also “Auto Zeitung“.

The Magazine Auto Motor und Sport praised its tests results on snow, based on the shortest braking distance, fastest handling time, and strongest traction on snow. The Nokian tyre got 100 points of a possible score of 100 in this.

From the snow test of the Auto Zeitung magazine, the new Nokian tyre scored 142 of a possible score of 150. The magazine wrote “Outstanding properties on snow characterize the Nokian WR D3“, and praised its neutral and enormous grip and dry braking. Shortest braking distance, fastest handling lap time, best traction on snow among all tested tyres and fastest handling lap time in the dry prove its qualities. The second lowest rolling resistance and for this reason second lowest fuel consumption as well as second lowest road noise show its eco friendliness.

The new tyre from Nokian Tyres was estimated as the best tyre on snow, but also on dry. The dry driving features were also considered good, the driving behaviour in the dry specially. It is important that winter tyres can handle the changing conditions of winter weather conditions of Central Europe. Usually the winter tyre can be good at something, but perform not so well in every test category. The tyre that is strong in each category tested is the most reliable for roads of Central Europe.

ADAC, the German automobile association, gave 1,8 points for the tyre in the dry, for handling 1,6, and 2,1 on snow and 2,3 on ice. Mark 1 is the best mark and 6 the worst mark in the German mark system. The eco-friendliness of the tyre received good comments as well.

Not only to be the test winner, but Nokian WR D3 is also the lowest priced of the winter tyres with a cost of 112 euros, whereas the competitors cost around 133 euros. The Nokian WR D3 is tailored for medium-sized and small family cars and drivers who value safe, economic driving. Tyres are available in sizes from 13” to 20”, speed ratings ranging from T to W (190 – 270 km/h). These new winter products aimed particularly at the Central European markets are from now on available for retail.

Tyres for Northern conditions

Since 2000, the Finnish tyre manufacturer Nokian Tyres has had a product family designer specially for Northern conditions. This Nordic winter tyre (in Finnish, talvirengas) range is called Hakkapeliitta. The product family includes tyres for passenger cars, SUVs and delivery vans, and friction and studded tyres.

As the sales of friction tyres is continuously increasing, Nokian Tyres believes the future of both studded tyres and frictions tyres. The good ice grip can be only provided by studded tyres, and it is needed in the extreme winter conditions of the Nordic countries. Studded tyres are safer in sudden changes of weather. And in addition to improving their own driving safety, vehicles with studded tyres also enhance the safety of cars with friction tyres because studs buff the slippery road surface.

In 1999, studded tyres made up approximately 84% of all winter tyres sold in Finland, approximately 70% in Sweden and about 51% in Norway. These percentages have gotten smaller since, but the previous winters with so much snow and ice might have changed the percentages again.

From this product range the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 2 was the first tyre to combine the best grip qualities of both studded and studless tyres. The tyre combined the ice grip qualities of studded tyres with the snow grip properties of friction tyres. Since then these type of tyres have become more and more popular, and Nokian Tyres still leads the way as the winter tyres expertise of the world.

Winter tyres for rough conditions

More than 75 years of experience of making winter tyres for northern conditions makes Nokian Tyres to be the worldwide leading winter tyre (in Finnish: talvirengas) manufacturer. Their tyres have gone through the extreme tests in extreme conditions; Nokian Tyres have been under various cars and drivers; with their tyres millions of kilometers have been driven in harsh winter conditions throughout the years.

The winter of the North is demanding: snow and ice on the road, slush and snowy mud, darkness and frost. The conditions are changing all the time, and it can get really challenging from time to time. In this kind of conditions Nokian Tyres is testing their winter tyres before starting to manufacturing them. Every new model is tested in various conditions, either in the company’s testing center in Lapland or another one in southern Finland, where the weather conditions are different, having more slush and variation in conditions.

During the last winters heavy snowfall and rapidly changing conditions became usual news all over the Europe. Demands for the tyres in this weather are great, and not all tyres are capable to meet them. The consequence: an enormous traffic chaos, mile long jams on the motorways, complete closures, severe accidents with numerous casualties.

Over the years Nokian Tyres has won winter tyre tests made by independent parties. Their winter tyres are constantly chosen as the safest and most trusted of all new tyres. Last year for example the new Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 won several Finnish, Swedish and Russian car magazines' tests. The tyre (in Finnish: rengas) was celebrated for the basic qualities of a good winter tyre: excellent winter grip and pleasant, stable and sensitive driving response. Za Rulem, the big Russian car magazine wrote "There are no surprises for the driver when braking or accelerating in corners", which gives a good idea of the quality of this tyre.

Nokian Tyres is also pioneering in environmental friendliness. They see lots of effort making the manufacturing process as eco-friendly as possible. By using raw materials that are made from purified, low-aromatic oils the company helps to lower their consumption – but this new innovation also reduce the fuel consumption, because they offer extremely low rolling resistance.
