Nokian Tyres Fastest on Ice
The new world record for fastest car on ice was set by Nokian Tyres' Finnish test driver Janne Laitinen who drove 331,610 km/h (206,05 mph) on the Gulf of Bothnia in Oulu, Finland. The record was broken on March 6th on a 14-kilometer ice track in freezing conditions. The world's leading winter tyre manufacturer equipped the record-breaking car with Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 studded tyres (255/35R20 97 T XL).
Extreme speeds emphasize the role of top-quality tyres; they are the vehicle’s only contact point with the driving surface. When driving at exceptionally high speeds on slippery ice, the tyres must provide maximal grip, excellent structural durability and handling properties that are in line with the car's high power.
The acceleration formula is demanding. When a car moves at a speed of 331 km/h, the car covers over 92 meters in one second. The tyres are under immense pressure at these high speeds, and their diameter can increase by 15–20 mm.
As the air resistance increases, more traction is needed in order to pick up speed. Testing at high speeds in demanding conditions forms an important part of the Nokian winter tyre (in Finnish: talvirengas) development. Testing the boundaries can teach new things, which can then be reflected in all of the products explains Matti Morri from the Nokian Tyres' Technical Customer Service Manager.
The Guinness World Records organization outlines detailed rules for ice driving world records. The time for the one-kilometer distance is taken for driving in both directions of the track, and the world record time is the average of these two results. The vehicle takes a flying start. There is a total of one hour to complete the record attempt. The ice has to be natural and it may not be roughed up or treated with any chemicals. The tyres must be commercially available and approved for road traffic in the country in which the record attempt takes place.
Nokian winter tyre master of extreme conditions
Nokian Tyres developed the world’s first winter tyre for raw, subzero conditions back in 1934. Two years later, it introduced the Hakkapeliitta, designed for northern winters and today one of the world’s best-known winter tyre brands. The world’s northernmost tyre manufacturer tests and develops new additions, customized for different uses, for its winter tyre family at its own test facilities in Ivalo, 300 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle.
Nokian Tyres is the only tyre manufacturer in the world that focuses on products and services that facilitate safe transportation in Nordic conditions. The company's innovative passenger car, van and heavy-duty machinery tyres are mainly marketed in areas that have snow, forest and changing seasons that make driving conditions demanding. Nokian Tyres owns the Vianor tyre chain that comprises more than 770 stores in 20 countries. The company's net sales for 2010 totalled approximately EUR 1,058 million, and it had 3,500 employees.

When is it time to replace worn tyres with new ones?
As a general rule it could be said that when you're preparing for the winter in the fall, the tread should have at least 2/3 of the groove depth left. This means that the tyre still has a sufficient tread and edges to provide a good grip. The Vianor Industrial Grows
Particularly in Sweden the Vianor Industrial concept has grown rapidly. There are already 12 fully specialized Vianor outlets and four new Vianor Industrial establishments will open in early 2012.November 23 2011
The Vianor Industrial Grows
The growth of service requirements and high demands of technology within the field of heavy construction machine tyres (in Finnish: renkaat) has put the unique concept of Vianor on the map for reaching over the standards of customer service. In Finland, Sweden, Norway and Ukraine, the concept of Vianor Industrial is already close to 30 outlets.
Particularly in Sweden the Vianor Industrial concept has grown rapidly. There are already 12 fully specialized Vianor outlets and four new Vianor Industrial establishments will open in early 2012.
The technical training of the staff in these four service stations has been largely completed. The tyre repairing and installation of equipment inventory, and investments are also currently underway, says Vianor’s product manager of tyres for industrial vehicles, Leif Karlsson. The Vianor Industrial concept will continue to grow elsewhere, because Ukraine is currently negotiating for new outlets. In addition, the concept is being extended in the future, at least in Kazakhstan, and Russia.
The tyre chain Vianor and Nokian Heavy Tyres jointly developed the concept of Vianor Industrial for a professional service of heavy duty-tyres. The concept is used in the vertical plane for entrepreneurs and contractors to provide professional solutions utilizing the latest innovations and business models.
The strength of the concept is that Vianor improved the ability to be close to customers and understanding the different tyres with anticipation of the needs and to develop new solutions to problems within both the production as on the service side. Cooperation with Nokian Heavy Tyres enables the flow of information and development in an unbroken chain of products between the manufacturer, distributor and end-user, says Vianor’s marketing manager of heavy tyres, Juha Lehtinen.
Trained and expert dealers with special skills are also available to customers in other Vianor outlets, which are constantly consulted and further trained when needed in order to achieve the best possible solutions for the end-user. The Vianor Industrial concept is growing in the future, together with the involved retail outlets.
At present the retail outlets in Finland operating within the Vianor Industrial concept are located in Hyvinkää, Tampere and Ylivieska.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta winter tyre 7 SUV
This new tyre combines unyielding grip with exceptional durability and unique driving comfort. For a unique winter grip and soft road contact, the tyres (in Finnish: renkaat) are equipped with the Air Claw Technology – a flawless combination of an entirely new stud solution and the droplet-shaped air shock absorbers in the front edge of the tread blocks.
Slush edges maximise lateral grip
For heavy, high-performance SUVs, balanced grip characteristics and the ability to control them are vital. Drivers who love to drive an SUV especially want reliable lateral grip to ensure good steering and stability of the high vehicle in high speed and in extreme conditions. To further improve the excellent lateral grip of the Nokian Hakkapeliitta SUV 7, the shoulders of the tyre are equipped with staggered slush edges customized for SUV use. The new SUV Hakkapeliitta has the ability to optimally utilize the new driving stability management systems and thereby to deliver added safety and better performance in demanding circumstances
Driving comfort with balance and precision
The sporty, high-grip tyre carries the heavy tyre load with excellent control, stability and reliability on an icy and wet road. The tyre also delivers superior performance on snow and on clean roads. In addition to convincing grip in extreme conditions, this SUV tyre provides a precise, logical and balanced driving experience. The aggressive tread pattern features a dense, sharp-edged zig-zag siping to provide additional grip. Thanks to the geometric tread design, the tyre will not get clogged up with snow or slush; instead, it cleans easily and runs effortlessly in deep snow and slush on challenging forest roads.
Side impact protection gives added durability
In SUV use, the side walls of the tyre must also be able to withstand cuts and punctures. The multi-purpose Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 SUV comes with side impact protection for better durability. The rubber compound used in the new tyre has been adapted for winter use in SUVs. The tyre tread is made from a compound of natural rubber, silica and canola oil, which improves tear resistance and grip on ice. In addition, the tyre can easily withstand punctures from sharp-edged stones.
Safety with the tyre condition indicator
Tread indicators show the tyre condition, which increases driving comfort and safety. Developed and patented by Nokian Tyres, the Driving Safety Indicator (DSI) indicates in numbers how many millimeters of tread remain in the main grooves of the tyre. Similarly, the snowflake symbol is a winter safety indicator. It remains visible until the groove depth is four millimeters. For safe winter driving, the required groove depth is at least 4 to 5 millimeters. The Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 SUV will first be available in a range of sizes covering 21 items from 16” to 21” tyres.
Nokian Hakkapeliitta winter tyre 5 SUV
The Nokian Hakkapeliitta product family will expand with a potent newcomer when Nokian Tyres introduces its new Nokian Hakkapeliitta Sport Utility 5 designed for SUVs. The Nokian Hakkapeliitta Sport Utility 5 offers the same ingenious technical solutions found in the new Nokian Hakkapeliitta 5 for passenger cars. In addition to their appearance, several common innovations identify the tyres as twins.
Good grip, sturdiness and durability
High-performance tyres (in Finnish: renkaat) for heavy vehicles must offer excellent grip. Well-balanced grip properties are essential when designing tyres for SUVs. Maximizing the lateral grip is of particular importance in order to ensure that the vehicle can be controlled under extreme conditions. The bear claw and upgraded square stud also enhance the grip of the new SUV tyre.
Polished main grooves
The handsome and massive SUV tyre features polished main grooves. Snow and slush come easily off the tyre along the smooth and shiny grooves. Thanks to the tread pattern, the tyre cleans easily and runs effortlessly in deep snow and slush on challenging forest and cabin roads.
Safety from alerts, tips and indicators
Signs and alerts make winter conditions easier for SUV drivers and increase safety. Drivers can affect the resistance of studs and how they fall into place by running in brand new tyres. Calm and careful driving is recommended during the first 500 kilometers: avoid hard breaking and acceleration, as well as abrupt controllability. All studs are encircled by a run-in indicator that fades at the end of the run-in.

Uncompromising Nokian testing
Tyres are surprisingly technical products, consisting of many components and subject to exacting requirements. They are active safety factors in vehicles, providing the only contact with the ground. Finns are, by nature, familiar with snow, ice, slush and fickle winter weather. This, however, does not ensure a magic formula for winter tyre (in Finnish: talvirengas) solutions. You also need technical skills, experience, a systematic approach, determination, a good deal of work and a dash of Nordic frenzy.
The main task of R&D is to support the company’s status as the manufacturer of the world’s best winter and forestry tyres. The key R&D principle has remained the same for over 75 years: to develop tyres for consumers driving in northern conditions, who demand safety and durability from their tyres in all circumstances.
Development is based on the principle of sustainable safety, which states that the safety properties of a tyre should remain intact, even as the tyre wears.
Safety is improved using technical innovations
Apart from safety and economy, the company also emphasises the advanced features and originality of its products. The innovation processes aim to profitably process and commercialise new ideas. The square stud, driving safety indicator (DSI) and aquaplaning indicator are some of our latest innovations to improve tyre safety and driving comfort.
Sharply focused specialization point the way for R&D
Tyre development requires carefully focused planning. Different market areas need their own customized products. The R&D team keeps close track of the movements and changes in the markets’ and consumers’ needs. Creating successful products calls for detailed familiarization, with new developments in automobile technology and confidential co-operation with machine and equipment manufacturers is a must in the development of heavy tyres.
Improved car performance has increased the demand for low-profile, high-speed passenger car tyres, and Nokian Tyres has launched a variety of new products in this segment. SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) tyres are a growing product group.
In the heavy tyres product area, special emphasis is placed on radial special tyres. The development of retreading materials draws on the vast range of tyre technology know-how and expertise accumulated at Nokian Tyres.

Tyre safety during the winter season
The topic of the jubilee seminar was tyre safety during the winter season. Additionally to the seminar lecturers and panels, the participants were able to test drive different winter tyres (in Finnish, talvirengas) from several manufacturers in the race track of Vantaa.
The jubilee seminar
According to Sainio, the most important thing for the car safety are tyres that are in a good shape and suitable for the surface. But not only tyres make car safe: from driver anticipation, foreseeing and respect for the other driver is needed.
The jubilee seminar
The 10th Rengasfoorumi (in English, tyre forum) was held 9th of March 2011 in Vantaa, Finland. Rengasfoorumi is annual meeting of car and traffic journalist, and people working in the tyre industry.
The topic of the jubilee seminar was tyre safety during the winter season. Additionally to the seminar lecturers and panels, the participants were able to test drive different winter tyres (in Finnish, talvirengas) from several manufacturers in the race track of Vantaa.
The first presentation was held by chairman of the board, Mr. J Nuora. His presentation was introduction to the day’s topic. Nuora presented the winter tyre regulations and recommendations also. Maybe the most intriguing fact was that of the accidents caused by snowy or icy circumstances, 36 percents are related to the tyres. Challenging and changing road conditions confront both tyres and drivers.
Nuora held a critical view to the current legislations related to studded tyres. He pointed out that in 21st century, already 13 accidents leading to the death of 16 people have happened at October, when the weather conditions are changing fast. Most car owners follow the law saying that studded tyres are allowed from November onwards, and they will not change the studded tyres before that date. In neighbour countries like Sweden, the studded tyres can be installed already in the start of October. Changing the legistaltion similar to the neighbor countries could save lives, Nuora addressed.
The next speaker was chief engineer Mr P Sainio from Aalto University. He presented different aspects of the discussion related to the studded tyres. As Sainio noted, there are enthuastic supporters for every types of winter tyres, and the discussion of the best winter tyres (in Finnish, renkaat) gets often deeply passionate. Sainio pointed out that discussions are fulfilled with emotions, and the own aspect is usually supported by research, tests and statistics claiming the excellence of that aspect.
According Sainio, there is only a limited amount of good research information available relate to the safety of the traffic, harms that tyres can do for the asphalt, tyre noise or street dust. The lack of comparative aspect and continuation in the research is one problem; the other is the constant development of tyre and car technology, which makes studies to be all the time outdated.

Ideal results on all road conditions
Shortest braking distance, fastest handling lap time, best traction on snow among all tested tyres (in Finnish: renkaat) and fastest handling lap time in the dry prove its high qualities. Second lowest rolling resistance and for this reason second lowest fuel consumption as well as second lowest road noise, show its eco friendliness. The skill to achieve top scores in the tyre test is to have ideal results on all road conditions. Or at least to be strongly outstanding in one area so that slight weaknesses can be compensated in the scoring system under certain circumstances. The best example is given by new Finnish Nokian WR D3 which indeed on wet roads performs relatively poor due to feeble aquaplaning results but clearly sets the benchmark on snow with the shortest braking distance, the best traction and a very well-tempered driving behavior: 100 points of a possible score of 100 for the Nokian which not only achieves the best lap time on the snowy handling lane but also drives effortless and precise at the same time.
Durable Nokian WR D3 is tailored for medium-sized and small family cars and drivers who value safe, economic driving. Nokian WR A3, on the other hand, is optimized for larger and more powerful vehicles with a special emphasis placed on the tyre's sensitive driving response even at higher speeds.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 won a test held by Tuulilasi (13/2011). "The 7's best features are balanced driving properties in different conditions. When driving on ice, the tyres even allow for a small mistake and there's still enough grip for correction.
Nokian Hakkapeliitta winter tyre test wins
Year 2011 seems to be a continuum to the success story of the 75 year old Nokian Hakkapelitta winter tyre. Hakkapelitta winter tyres (in Finnish: talvirenkaat) have scored test wins and top positions both with their studded as well as non-studded tyres. The sensation continues this year as well, as the studded Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 and non-studded Nokian Hakkapeliitta R have received excellent reviews in magazine tests both in Finland and abroad.
Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 won a test held by Tuulilasi (13/2011). "The 7's best features are balanced driving properties in different conditions. When driving on ice, the tyres even allow for a small mistake and there's still enough grip for correction. Mild over-steering during snow conditions doesn't require correcting, as the slipping straightens itself out", says Tuulilasi which is a Finnish motoring magazine with 48 years of testing experience. Five 205/55 R16 sized tyres were tested.
The studded Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 achieved second position in a test held by Tekniikan Maailma which is a 58 year old Finnish magazine specialized in technique and equipment testing. Tekniikan Maailma (17/2011) summarises the test as: “Nokian represents the absolute peak level of the tyre industry regarding grip on ice and snow. The tyre is excellent to drive, steers impeccably on grip limits, even during sliding and in extreme conditions control is easy. For those wanting the best possible winter grip, Nokian is the number one choice for winter". Ten studded 205/55 R16 tyres were tested.
In the very same magazine, also the Nokian Hakkapeliitta R gained second position in the Tekniikan Maailma's (17/2011) test. "Nokian winter tyre works more than well on an icy road and brilliantly in snow. The Nokian Hakkapeliitta R winter tyre is easy to control and steers well on the best grip limit and returns easily from extreme situations. The tyre is quiet and its rolling resistance is the lowest of the entire test", says Tekniikan Maailma. Nine non-studded tyres size 205/65 R16 were used in the test.
The non-studded winter tyre Nokian Hakkapeliitta R won the Tuulilasi (12/2011) test. "Nokian non-studded winter tyre Nokian Hakkapeliitta R is at its strongest on ice and in snow. Its best features are balanced driving qualities and good grip in different driving situations. With Hakkapeliitta R, it is possible to correct even after slipping has begun", writes Tuulilasi, which tested five non-studded winter tyres sized 205/55 R16.

Propably the best winter tyres?
Once again the Nokian winter tyre (in Finnish, talvirengas) is “very recommendable” in tests. The new Nokian WR D3 winter tyre got the best statements in the winter tyre tests of 2011 of the German car magazines “Auto Motor und Sport“ and also “Auto Zeitung“.
The Magazine Auto Motor und Sport praised its tests results on snow, based on the shortest braking distance, fastest handling time, and strongest traction on snow. The Nokian tyre got 100 points of a possible score of 100 in this.
From the snow test of the Auto Zeitung magazine, the new Nokian tyre scored 142 of a possible score of 150. The magazine wrote “Outstanding properties on snow characterize the Nokian WR D3“, and praised its neutral and enormous grip and dry braking. Shortest braking distance, fastest handling lap time, best traction on snow among all tested tyres and fastest handling lap time in the dry prove its qualities. The second lowest rolling resistance and for this reason second lowest fuel consumption as well as second lowest road noise show its eco friendliness.
The new tyre from Nokian Tyres was estimated as the best tyre on snow, but also on dry. The dry driving features were also considered good, the driving behaviour in the dry specially. It is important that winter tyres can handle the changing conditions of winter weather conditions of Central Europe. Usually the winter tyre can be good at something, but perform not so well in every test category. The tyre that is strong in each category tested is the most reliable for roads of Central Europe.
ADAC, the German automobile association, gave 1,8 points for the tyre in the dry, for handling 1,6, and 2,1 on snow and 2,3 on ice. Mark 1 is the best mark and 6 the worst mark in the German mark system. The eco-friendliness of the tyre received good comments as well.
Not only to be the test winner, but Nokian WR D3 is also the lowest priced of the winter tyres with a cost of 112 euros, whereas the competitors cost around 133 euros. The Nokian WR D3 is tailored for medium-sized and small family cars and drivers who value safe, economic driving. Tyres are available in sizes from 13” to 20”, speed ratings ranging from T to W (190 – 270 km/h). These new winter products aimed particularly at the Central European markets are from now on available for retail.

Tips for checking the condition of your tyres
Here are three tips for making your car safer for winter drive and making wintertime driving more enjoyable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You should always follow the instructions and weather, and choose the right tyres accordingly. In Nordic countries, using winter tyres (in Finnish, talvirenkaat), is compulsory during the winter times, and the law sets the times when to use these tyres. There are some differences on this dates country by country, but for example in Finland it is compulsory to use winter tyres during December, January and February in every passenger car and van. studded tyres can be used from 1st November until Monday after Easter. These date limits are subject to change based on the weather outside: studded tyres are allowed at any time if the surface of the road is slippery or icy.
Winter tyres should be changed in good time and before witer really arrives. This requires following the weather forecasts and some anticipating. When winter is coming, nights get colder and the temperature can drop under zero degrees. That casually means the on morning times, the temperature can be near zero, which may affect to the surface of the streets and make them more slippery. Therefore it is advisable to change the tyres (In Finnish: renkaat) more in advance than little too late. According to the widely known misconception, winter tyres will be worn excessively if they are used on the bleak asphalt. That is incorrect: tyres will not be worn in week or two.
Check your tyres before changing them under your car. The basic check can be done home and without any special tools. Look first that there is no cracks, breaks or bulges on the face of the tyres. The second important issue to watch is that main tread should be at least 4 millimeters deep. For checking this you do not need to have gage instrument, since the depth of the tread can be easily checked with a matchstick. Put the matchstick in the tread; if the sulphur end is not to be seen, then the tread is deep enough.
Have a safe winter days driving with your car!!!!!!!!!
