Nokian Tyres Fastest on Ice

The new world record for fastest car on ice was set by Nokian Tyres' Finnish test driver Janne Laitinen who drove 331,610 km/h (206,05 mph) on the Gulf of Bothnia in Oulu, Finland. The record was broken on March 6th on a 14-kilometer ice track in freezing conditions. The world's leading winter tyre manufacturer equipped the record-breaking car with Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 studded tyres (255/35R20 97 T XL).

Extreme speeds emphasize the role of top-quality tyres; they are the vehicle’s only contact point with the driving surface. When driving at exceptionally high speeds on slippery ice, the tyres must provide maximal grip, excellent structural durability and handling properties that are in line with the car's high power.

The acceleration formula is demanding. When a car moves at a speed of 331 km/h, the car covers over 92 meters in one second. The tyres are under immense pressure at these high speeds, and their diameter can increase by 15–20 mm.

As the air resistance increases, more traction is needed in order to pick up speed. Testing at high speeds in demanding conditions forms an important part of the Nokian winter tyre (in Finnish: talvirengas) development. Testing the boundaries can teach new things, which can then be reflected in all of the products explains Matti Morri from the Nokian Tyres' Technical Customer Service Manager.

The Guinness World Records organization outlines detailed rules for ice driving world records. The time for the one-kilometer distance is taken for driving in both directions of the track, and the world record time is the average of these two results. The vehicle takes a flying start. There is a total of one hour to complete the record attempt. The ice has to be natural and it may not be roughed up or treated with any chemicals. The tyres must be commercially available and approved for road traffic in the country in which the record attempt takes place.

Nokian winter tyre master of extreme conditions

Nokian Tyres developed the world’s first winter tyre for raw, subzero conditions back in 1934. Two years later, it introduced the Hakkapeliitta, designed for northern winters and today one of the world’s best-known winter tyre brands. The world’s northernmost tyre manufacturer tests and develops new additions, customized for different uses, for its winter tyre family at its own test facilities in Ivalo, 300 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle.

Nokian Tyres is the only tyre manufacturer in the world that focuses on products and services that facilitate safe transportation in Nordic conditions. The company's innovative passenger car, van and heavy-duty machinery tyres are mainly marketed in areas that have snow, forest and changing seasons that make driving conditions demanding. Nokian Tyres owns the Vianor tyre chain that comprises more than 770 stores in 20 countries. The company's net sales for 2010 totalled approximately EUR 1,058 million, and it had 3,500 employees.

Uncompromising Nokian testing

Tyres are surprisingly technical products, consisting of many components and subject to exacting requirements. They are active safety factors in vehicles, providing the only contact with the ground. Finns are, by nature, familiar with snow, ice, slush and fickle winter weather. This, however, does not ensure a magic formula for winter tyre (in Finnish: talvirengas) solutions. You also need technical skills, experience, a systematic approach, determination, a good deal of work and a dash of Nordic frenzy.

The main task of R&D is to support the company’s status as the manufacturer of the world’s best winter and forestry tyres. The key R&D principle has remained the same for over 75 years: to develop tyres for consumers driving in northern conditions, who demand safety and durability from their tyres in all circumstances.

Development is based on the principle of sustainable safety, which states that the safety properties of a tyre should remain intact, even as the tyre wears.

Safety is improved using technical innovations

Apart from safety and economy, the company also emphasises the advanced features and originality of its products. The innovation processes aim to profitably process and commercialise new ideas. The square stud, driving safety indicator (DSI) and aquaplaning indicator are some of our latest innovations to improve tyre safety and driving comfort.

Sharply focused specialization point the way for R&D

Tyre development requires carefully focused planning. Different market areas need their own customized products. The R&D team keeps close track of the movements and changes in the markets’ and consumers’ needs. Creating successful products calls for detailed familiarization, with new developments in automobile technology and confidential co-operation with machine and equipment manufacturers is a must in the development of heavy tyres.

Improved car performance has increased the demand for low-profile, high-speed passenger car tyres, and Nokian Tyres has launched a variety of new products in this segment. SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) tyres are a growing product group.

In the heavy tyres product area, special emphasis is placed on radial special tyres. The development of retreading materials draws on the vast range of tyre technology know-how and expertise accumulated at Nokian Tyres.

Poor tyre as a risk factor

Studies have shown that bald tyres are a risk factor for fatal accidents. About 70 percent of car accidents occur in bad weather conditions, such as watery, slushy, snowy or icy roads.

- People do not understand it enough that the bad weather grip is of paramount importance. Driving ability is not a problem, but surprisingly different weather conditions are. If our roads were icy all year around, it is unlikely that furthermore accidents would happen because people would get used to a constant and steady low level of friction. Now, the friction level variability surprises motorists and you don’t know how to adjust your speed to prevailing conditions, Morri said.

How to choose your car tyres?

When choosing a suitable tyre (in Finnish: rengas) for your car, you should start with your own awareness of the driving experience. If you are an inexperienced driver, Morri recommends studded tyres.

A winter tyre study shows that the majority of the Finnish population is of the opinion that studded tyres are a better option for the inexperienced drivers.

- An experienced driver can choose between studded winter tyres, which require more anticipation for the driver, observance in intervals, and, of course, the equipment of new cars also improves the safety in the changing weather conditions. Anyway motorists can significantly affect the safety of the tyres in their own driving, for example, just by anticipating situations and driving more patiently.

The non-studded tyre is not an all-year tyre

Non-studded tyres are not to be used all-year around. YouGov Finland’s study indicates that every fourth Finn thinks that the non-studded tyre can be used all-year around.

- The non-studded tyres especially designed for Nordic regions are not intended for use all-year around. A warm road surface wears out the tyre and hence is not the ultimate tyre as a whole in summer driving conditions, and especially not intended for the Northern regions or Central European roads. The winter tyres designed for Central European roads are not the safest on Nordic winter road, Matti Morri ends.

Ideal results on all road conditions

Shortest braking distance, fastest handling lap time, best traction on snow among all tested tyres (in Finnish: renkaat) and fastest handling lap time in the dry prove its high qualities. Second lowest rolling resistance and for this reason second lowest fuel consumption as well as second lowest road noise, show its eco friendliness. The skill to achieve top scores in the tyre test is to have ideal results on all road conditions. Or at least to be strongly outstanding in one area so that slight weaknesses can be compensated in the scoring system under certain circumstances. The best example is given by new Finnish Nokian WR D3 which indeed on wet roads performs relatively poor due to feeble aquaplaning results but clearly sets the benchmark on snow with the shortest braking distance, the best traction and a very well-tempered driving behavior: 100 points of a possible score of 100 for the Nokian which not only achieves the best lap time on the snowy handling lane but also drives effortless and precise at the same time.

Durable Nokian WR D3 is tailored for medium-sized and small family cars and drivers who value safe, economic driving. Nokian WR A3, on the other hand, is optimized for larger and more powerful vehicles with a special emphasis placed on the tyre's sensitive driving response even at higher speeds.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta winter tyre test wins

Year 2011 seems to be a continuum to the success story of the 75 year old Nokian Hakkapelitta winter tyre. Hakkapelitta winter tyres (in Finnish: talvirenkaat) have scored test wins and top positions both with their studded as well as non-studded tyres. The sensation continues this year as well, as the studded Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 and non-studded Nokian Hakkapeliitta R have received excellent reviews in magazine tests both in Finland and abroad.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 won a test held by Tuulilasi (13/2011). "The 7's best features are balanced driving properties in different conditions. When driving on ice, the tyres even allow for a small mistake and there's still enough grip for correction. Mild over-steering during snow conditions doesn't require correcting, as the slipping straightens itself out", says Tuulilasi which is a Finnish motoring magazine with 48 years of testing experience. Five 205/55 R16 sized tyres were tested.

The studded Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 achieved second position in a test held by Tekniikan Maailma which is a 58 year old Finnish magazine specialized in technique and equipment testing. Tekniikan Maailma (17/2011) summarises the test as: “Nokian represents the absolute peak level of the tyre industry regarding grip on ice and snow. The tyre is excellent to drive, steers impeccably on grip limits, even during sliding and in extreme conditions control is easy. For those wanting the best possible winter grip, Nokian is the number one choice for winter". Ten studded 205/55 R16 tyres were tested.

In the very same magazine, also the Nokian Hakkapeliitta R gained second position in the Tekniikan Maailma's (17/2011) test. "Nokian winter tyre works more than well on an icy road and brilliantly in snow. The Nokian Hakkapeliitta R winter tyre is easy to control and steers well on the best grip limit and returns easily from extreme situations. The tyre is quiet and its rolling resistance is the lowest of the entire test", says Tekniikan Maailma. Nine non-studded tyres size 205/65 R16 were used in the test.

The non-studded winter tyre Nokian Hakkapeliitta R won the Tuulilasi (12/2011) test. "Nokian non-studded winter tyre Nokian Hakkapeliitta R is at its strongest on ice and in snow. Its best features are balanced driving qualities and good grip in different driving situations. With Hakkapeliitta R, it is possible to correct even after slipping has begun", writes Tuulilasi, which tested five non-studded winter tyres sized 205/55 R16.

Tyres for Northern conditions

Since 2000, the Finnish tyre manufacturer Nokian Tyres has had a product family designer specially for Northern conditions. This Nordic winter tyre (in Finnish, talvirengas) range is called Hakkapeliitta. The product family includes tyres for passenger cars, SUVs and delivery vans, and friction and studded tyres.

As the sales of friction tyres is continuously increasing, Nokian Tyres believes the future of both studded tyres and frictions tyres. The good ice grip can be only provided by studded tyres, and it is needed in the extreme winter conditions of the Nordic countries. Studded tyres are safer in sudden changes of weather. And in addition to improving their own driving safety, vehicles with studded tyres also enhance the safety of cars with friction tyres because studs buff the slippery road surface.

In 1999, studded tyres made up approximately 84% of all winter tyres sold in Finland, approximately 70% in Sweden and about 51% in Norway. These percentages have gotten smaller since, but the previous winters with so much snow and ice might have changed the percentages again.

From this product range the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 2 was the first tyre to combine the best grip qualities of both studded and studless tyres. The tyre combined the ice grip qualities of studded tyres with the snow grip properties of friction tyres. Since then these type of tyres have become more and more popular, and Nokian Tyres still leads the way as the winter tyres expertise of the world.

Winter tyres for rough conditions

More than 75 years of experience of making winter tyres for northern conditions makes Nokian Tyres to be the worldwide leading winter tyre (in Finnish: talvirengas) manufacturer. Their tyres have gone through the extreme tests in extreme conditions; Nokian Tyres have been under various cars and drivers; with their tyres millions of kilometers have been driven in harsh winter conditions throughout the years.

The winter of the North is demanding: snow and ice on the road, slush and snowy mud, darkness and frost. The conditions are changing all the time, and it can get really challenging from time to time. In this kind of conditions Nokian Tyres is testing their winter tyres before starting to manufacturing them. Every new model is tested in various conditions, either in the company’s testing center in Lapland or another one in southern Finland, where the weather conditions are different, having more slush and variation in conditions.

During the last winters heavy snowfall and rapidly changing conditions became usual news all over the Europe. Demands for the tyres in this weather are great, and not all tyres are capable to meet them. The consequence: an enormous traffic chaos, mile long jams on the motorways, complete closures, severe accidents with numerous casualties.

Over the years Nokian Tyres has won winter tyre tests made by independent parties. Their winter tyres are constantly chosen as the safest and most trusted of all new tyres. Last year for example the new Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 won several Finnish, Swedish and Russian car magazines' tests. The tyre (in Finnish: rengas) was celebrated for the basic qualities of a good winter tyre: excellent winter grip and pleasant, stable and sensitive driving response. Za Rulem, the big Russian car magazine wrote "There are no surprises for the driver when braking or accelerating in corners", which gives a good idea of the quality of this tyre.

Nokian Tyres is also pioneering in environmental friendliness. They see lots of effort making the manufacturing process as eco-friendly as possible. By using raw materials that are made from purified, low-aromatic oils the company helps to lower their consumption – but this new innovation also reduce the fuel consumption, because they offer extremely low rolling resistance.

Tips for checking the condition of your winter tyres

Here are five more tips for making your car safer for winter

Check the age of your winter tyres (in Finnish, talvirenkaat). Tyres over four years old are not safe enough, even they look fine and the tread is deep enough (4 millimeters at least). Tyres are made from rubber, and rubber products loose their features when aging. This feature of rubber makes tyres more vulnerable when they are getting over four years old: if your tyres are over aged, you should consider changing them.

If you are using studded tyres, make sure that studs are robustly attached to tyres. If studs are moving or bending, the tyres are not safe anymore. The dangers of moving studs are easily seen when driving on icy roads: the grip gets worse. The amount of the studs is remarkable also: if too many studs have come out, the tyres will not fulfill their function. Compare the amount of the stud in each tyre: there should be the same amount of suds left in every tyre.

Tyres that are worn out uneven are getting unsafe. When the tyres are installed correctly, they should rotate straight, without ploughing or squint-angles. Tyres worn out unevenly mean that steering angles have been incorrect. If this is the case, steering angles should be checked, preferably by the specialist. If there are differences in the level of worn out from tyre to tyre (in finnish, rengas), the best tyres should be installed at the back regardless if the car is rear-driven, front-driven or 4x4. That will prevent the back tyres from sliding, which is the most dangerous way to slide with your car.

After installing winter tyres , the pressure of the tyres should be checked immediately. When the tyre pressure is right, the wheel will rotate lightly and it can be driven accurately. The right tyre pressure will save in fuel costs and lower harmful emissions released to the air.

And finally, check the correct rotating direction when installing the tyres. The tyre is made to rotate certain way. Only when the pattern is at the right way, it will work as designed.

Have safe driving trips at wintertime!
